About the Etelä-Kalaton cottage

Etelä-Kalaton is a stunning traditional Finnish cottage situated at the peace and quiet of a forest lake, surrounded by pine trees growing on unique esker ridges The surroundings are completely quiet and there are no nearby neighbours. Come here to enjoy the peace of the Finnish nature and the surrounding lake. According to our guests, the cottage is located at “one of the most unique places on our planet“, and we can not agree with them more. Both the cabin and the sauna has a west-facing view toward the sunset, offering stunning views of the sunset in the evening. Starting from September, when the conditions are right, the northern lights might be seen from the cottage.

The cabin is excellent for couples and families (up to 4 people) who want to enjoy the Finnish cottage life in full peace and quiet of nature. We require calm holiday behaviour from our guests, to respect the surrounding nature. In addition, for this cottage, guests must either have prior experience with gas appliances, solar electricity, and fireplaces, or be prepared to learn and follow the provided instructions.

The equipment includes reasonable consumption of electricity, gas and firewood, bed linen and towels, and use of the rowing boat.

Etelä-Kalaton is a one-floor cottage with a separate private lakeside sauna and a dock leading directly to the lake. This 60 m² cottage + 15 m² covered terrace is perfect for guests looking for a peaceful family or couple’s holiday in the nature. The cottage can accommodate up to 4 people, with four single beds (80×200 cm) arranged as two bunk beds in the family room and two single beds (80×200 cm) in the living room of the cottage.

The single-story layout includes an entrance hall, kitchen, a cozy living room with a large wooden dining table, a covered terrace at the cottage, a BBQ and picknick table on the yard. The cottage faces to the west, with an entire private lake in front of the cottage. Firewood is located in a separate building close to the cottage.

The cottage features a well-equipped kitchenette, supplied with sufficient equipments for guests to make delicious home-made meals. Sufficient cutlery, pans, basic herbs, and other cooking amenities can be found. In the cottage, there is both a gas and wood stove to cook food. Outside on the yard, there is a sizeable and multifunctional gas grill (BBQ) at the sheltered cooking area. The side burner of this gas grill can also be used as a gas stove to for example boil potatoes or to stir-fry vegetables. The dirty dishes will need to be washed at the sauna area. Available in the kitchenette: gas refrigerator with freezer compartment, gas stove top, wood stove, cooking utensils, dishes, basic spices, kitchen paper, dish soap.

The accommodation has one bedroom which fits two single beds (80×200 cm). Two other beds are located in the main living room. The bedroom has a window with view to the forest. Our guests can store their luggage and belongings in the shelves of the bedroom. We will put bedsheet on the beds before you arrive, and for each person, we will provide a towel.

The lake-side sauna of this cottage is just located a few steps from the cottage main building. Here in the sauna, there is a wood fired sauna stove-boiler. Place some firewood and fill the boiler with lake water to enjoy a relaxing sauna session and a hot shower afterwards. There is a covered terrace at the sauna, as well as a long dock leading directly to the lake. Available in the sauna: sauna, woodfired sauna boiler, shampoo and shower gel.

The cabin is heated with an enclosed wood-burning fireplace/wood-fired heater. Firewood for the fireplace and sauna is stored in the storage shelter close to the cottage and needs to be brought in to heat up the cottage (when needed). In July/August, heating is not needed.

The cottage’s electricity is supplied by solar energy (there are solar panels on the roof). The electricity is sufficient to charge phones, tablets, and other small electronic devices, as well as to provide lighting for the cottage.

It is recommended to bring your own drinking water or buy 5L bottles from grocery stores, as there is no running tap water  (=drinking water) at the cottage.

Water for other purposes than drinking, such as washing dishes and using the sauna, can be carried or pumped manually from the lake.

On the yard, close to the cottage, we have installed an environmental friendly toilet in the spring of 2023. It is clean, modern and uses a composting method to efficiently serve as a toilet. Toilet paper and composting materials are available in the toilet.

The parking area is 200 meters from the cabin, with access via a path. A wheelbarrow is provided for transporting belongings. The yard is mostly flat, but there is a slope near the cabin at the end of the path.

Driving distances to Etelä-Kalaton in Puumala:

  • From Puumala center to the cottage: 19 km

If you are travelling to Puumala from Mikkeli direction, you will enjoy one of the most scenic routes in the Nordic countries, namely Road 62. This road has many beautiful curves, with pine trees in the background and parts where you will be driving between incredible islands. Additionally, day trips to other cities in the region by public transportation is possible from Puumala center.

It takes about 20 minutes by car to drive to Puumala center (19 km). In Puumala, there is a K-Market and Sale. For dining out, Puumala has a great pizzeria and about five restaurants to choose from that serve local dishes, including freshly caught lake fish and other cuisines.

At the Puumala harbour, it is possible to go on a boat trip to explore Lake Saimaa, rent a canoe, kayak, or boat and mountain bike. There are affordable renting possibilities from local companies.

The cottage is surrounded by beautiful pine tree forest, and there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. The mushroom and berry-picking areas around the cottage are excellent.

Driving to Puumala to visit the grocery stores is the fastest option for buying food and other necessities like drinking water.

The Etelä-Kalaton cottage is situated peacefully in Rokansalo, Puumala (Finland). The Etelä-Kalaton Holiday Cottage is situated right in front of the Kalaton forest lake, on the east side of Puumala region. After booking, we can provide you the location of the parking lot and the cottage, so you can enter that in your GPS.

Cottage Information and Rental Rules

  • Reservations for our cottage can be made through the Johku online booking system, email, Whatsapp, or by calling us. The confirmation of the booking will be sent once the payment has been completed.

  • This accommodation fits maximum four people. There are four single beds (80 x 200 cm) at the cottage. Pets are not allowed at the cottage.

  • Check-in: starting at 15.00 on the day of arrival.

We understand that sometimes holiday plans change. It is possible to cancel the cottage booking after paying, but please read through the cancellation policies and the Reservation Terms and Conditions before booking: (2025 Reservation Terms and Conditions). For a refund, our guests are responsible for making the cancellation in the required timeframe before the supposed stay. A written cancellation is always required.
