Located on the scenic island of Viljakansaari in Puumala, the charming and well-equipped Latukka cottage offers an ideal retreat for those seeking peace and a connection with nature. This traditional Finnish cottage offers stunning views of Lake Saimaa, providing the perfect setting for a lakeside holiday. We welcome visitors who appreciate nature and peaceful surroundings to rent the Latukka cottage for a relaxing getaway.
The lake-side view of the cottage
From the cottage, a beautiful lake view opens to the west of Saimaa’s Kietävälänvirra towards the sunset. During the stay, our guests can fully relax and enjoy the beautiful and unique lake-side scenes. Both the cabin and the sauna offer fantastic views to the west.
In the evening, the sunset can be watched from the terrace or the deck of the cottage. Beginning in late September, when the conditions are favourable and the nights become darker earlier, our guests may witness a sky full of stars.
The living space of the Latukka holiday cottage
The cottage can accommodate up to 3-4 people, with one single beds and one big king-size bed for two people. If you are travelling with a total of 4 people, an additional mattress with comfortable bedsheets and a duvet can be organized for a small fee.

The size of the cottage
This 60 m² cabin is perfect for guests looking for a peaceful family or couple’s holiday, to be in nature, and to experience the calm of Lake Saimaa. This cottage is a suitable place to stay for a few days or longer to enjoy the nature.
Outdoor lakeside terrace of the cottage
In response to the wonderful feedback we’ve received from our guests, we’ve continued to enhance this property. Most recently, in the fall of 2023, we added a spacious 35-square-meter terrace to the cottage. This new addition offers the perfect space for outdoor dining, grilling, relaxing after the sauna, or simply enjoying the company of loved ones while enjoying the lovely lake-side views.
Private lake-side sauna with sandy beach
After enjoying the lakeside sauna at the cottage, our guests might find themselves missing it once they return home. The sauna is located right next to the cottage, accessible from the outdoor terrace. After each sauna session, guests can cool off in the clear, blue, stunning lake. From the sauna, it’s easy to reach the moderately-sized private sandy beach.
Electricity in the cottage
Fully equipped with electricity, the Latukka cottage is an excellent choice for those looking to experience cottage life for the first time or for those who simply want to enjoy nature without sacrificing modern conveniences such as an electric stove, electric kettle, or hairdryer.
The electricity can be used for daily activities such as cooking on the electric stove, heating, using the indoor lights and to charge small electronic devices as a phone or a tablet.
Cooking at the cottage
In the cottage, there is a comfortable kitchenette supplied with sufficient cutlery, pans, basic herbs, and other cooking necessities. To make hot meals, the electric indoor cooking stove and the multifunctional gas grill (BBQ) at the sheltered cooking area in the yard of the cottage can be used. When it is not windy, the side burner of the outdoor gas grill can be used as a gas stove to boil potatoes or to stir-fry vegetables.
Heating in the cottage
The cabin is heated with an electric heater. A fireplace is also present in the cottage, which can be used to heat up the cottage. Firewood for the fireplace and sauna is stored in the storage shelter close to the cottage.
Available drinking water
Upon arrival, 10 litres of drinking water will be waiting for you at the cottage as it is included in the rent. This water can be used for drinking, cooking, and cleaning food. It is recommended to bring your own drinking water or buy 5L bottles from grocery stores if you are planning to stay for several days, as there is no tap water at the cottage. Water for other purposes, such as washing dishes and using the sauna, can be carried or pumped manually from the lake.
Usage of the environmental friendly toilet
On the yard, just a couple of steps from the cottage, we have installed an environmental friendly toilet in the spring of 2023. It is clean, modern and uses a composting method to efficiently serve as a toilet. Toilet paper and composting materials to put in the toilet after using it, are available in the toilet.
The surrounding environment
The cottage is surrounded by beautiful coniferous forest, and there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. The mushroom and berry-picking areas around the cottage are excellent.
Important Information to know before renting the cottage:
- Smoking is strictly prohibited on the entire property.
- As the Latukka cottage is used by guests with pet (hair) allergies, pets and animals are not allowed, even if they are staying on the yard. Please respect this.
- Previous experience in heating up a wood-fired sauna, using a gas BBQ, and lighting a fireplace is required to safely stay at the cottage.
- Bed sheets and towels are included in the rental price.
- Guests are responsible for cleaning the cottage before checkout.

The Layout of the Latukka Cottage
Latukka is a one-level cottage consisting of one main bedroom (with one single bed and one king-size double bed), a living/dining room area, a kitchen, and a storage room close to the entrance. This cottage can comfortably host four adults. If desired, an additional mattress with comfortable bedsheets and duvets can be arranged for an extra visitor for a small surcharge. The covered terrace of the cottage has a direct lake view and connects to a brand new outdoor terrace, extending the outdoor space.
There is an outdoor-covered cooking area, equipped with a gas BBQ and gas pit. An outdoor eating table for four people is situated on the outdoor terrace, located closely to the outdoor cooking place. When the weather permits, both outdoor cooking and dining are possible. The private outdoor sauna is located right next to the main cottage. The comfortable changing room of the sauna is located indoors. The cottage has a wood-fired sauna and the usage of moderate firewood is included in the rent.
The deck from the sandy beach directly leads to Lake Saimaa. Parking on the yard is possible.

AREA OF THE COTTAGE
The Latukka cottage is located on Viljakansaari Island in Puumala, a beautiful area surrounded by Lake Saimaa. The area around the cottage is peaceful, and the accommodation is surrounded by forest, providing quietness and privacy. The surrounding forest is great for walking and gathering plenty of wild berries and mushrooms. With the rowing boat included in the rental of the Latukka cottage, fishing in Lake Saimaa is easily accessible. Lake Saimaa offers excellent fishing opportunities.
NEAREST SHOPS aND RESTAURANTS
Driving to the Puumala city center is the quickest option for purchasing food and other necessities, such as drinking water. It takes about 25 minutes by car to reach the city center (24 km away). In Puumala, there is a K-Market and a Sale grocery store. For dining out, Puumala offers a great pizzeria and around five restaurants that serve local dishes, including freshly caught lake fish, as well as other cuisines. Furthermore, the Puumala city center has a café, stores for purchasing fishing equipment, two gas stations, and more.

DISTANCE TO PUUMALA / NEARBY TOWNS OR CITIES
Latukka cottage in Puumala is conveniently situated within a reasonable driving distance from several major Finnish cities. Latukka Cottage is about 24 km away from Puumala’s city center.
Driving to the cottage in Puumala:
- From Helsinki: Approximately 300 kilometers, about a 3.5-hour drive.
- From Tampere: Approximately 335 kilometers, about a 4 hour drive.
- Mikkeli: About 93 kilometers to the west, roughly a 1-hour drive.
To visit other towns and cities in the region:
- Savonlinna (recommended!): Approximately 66 kilometers to the northeast, around a 1-hour drive.
- Imatra: About 77 kilometers to the southeast, around 1 hour and 10 minutes drive.
- Lappeenranta: About 110 kilometers to the southeast, roughly a 1.5-hour drive.
If you are traveling to Puumala from Mikkeli, you will enjoy one of the most scenic routes in the Nordic countries, namely Road 62. This road has many beautiful curves, with pine trees in the background and parts where you will be driving between incredible islands. Additionally, day trips to other cities in the region are convenient by car or motorcycle from Puumala.

Making a Reservation
Arrival and Departure
- Check-in: starting at 15.00 on the day of arrival.
- Check-out: by 12.00 on the day of departure.
Included in the Rental
The rental price of the cottage includes the equipment and facilities that were previously mentioned (see above) unless stated otherwise. A short overview of the most important elements:

Cancellation and Changes
We understand that sometimes holiday plans get changed. It is possible to cancel the cottage booking after paying, but please take the following points into account. For a refund, our guests are responsible for making the cancellation in the required timeframe before the supposed stay. A written cancellation is always required. For changing and cancelling your stay, please send an email to: ukonhonka@gmail.com.
The day of cancellation is the day the landlord has received the notice about the cancellation.
In case of cancellation, if the notice is submitted:
- At least 28 days before the supposed stay, only the administrative cost of 25,00€ will be charged,
- Shorter than 28 days but longer than 14 days before the supposed stay, 50% of the rental price will be charged,
- Less than 14 days before the supposed stay, the whole rental price will be charged.
Partial cancellation of the reservation is not possible. Partial cancellation (i.e., altering the arrival or departure date) will be considered a complete cancellation, and the remaining reservation will be a new, separate reservation.
