Important to know: To rent this cottage, previous experience in heating up a wood-fired sauna, using a gas BBQ, and lighting a fireplace is required. This is a hypoallergenic cottage, suitable for guests with pet allergies, therefore no pets are allowed on the entire property, including the yard.

About the Etelä-Kalaton Holiday Cottage in Puumala
Introduction
Etelä-Kalaton is a stunning traditional Finnish lodge situated at the peace and quiet of a forest lake, surrounded by pine trees growing on unique esker ridges in Rokansalo, Puumala. The cottage is located at a very private location, as there are no close neighbours around the entire lake and the surrounding woods.
The lake-side view of the cottage
Our guests can fully relax and recharge at this cottage. There is a private wood-fired sauna right by the lake, with a terrace connecting directly to the deck on the lake, providing a unique and unforgettable lakeside sauna experience. Both the cabin and the sauna have fantastic views to the west. In the evening, the sunset can be beautifully watched from the deck on the lake. Starting from September, when the conditions are right, the northern lights might be seen from the cottage. Additionally, the cabin is surrounded by beautiful moorland.
Space of the Etelä-Kalaton cottage
This 60 m² cabin is perfect for guests looking for a peaceful family or couple’s holiday, to be in nature, and to experience the calm of a forest lake. This cottage is a suitable place to stay for a few days to discover the area before continuing your road trip around Lake Saimaa.
The cottage can accommodate up to 4 people, with four single beds (80×200 cm) arranged as two bunk beds in the family room. If you are travelling with a total of 5 people, an additional mattress with comfortable bedsheets and a duvet can be organised for a small fee.
Please note that any additional guests must be agreed upon at the time of booking. We welcome those who wish to experience what Finnish nature has to offer. Please note that party groups are not allowed in this cottage!
Electricity in the cottage
The Etelä-Kalaton Cottage has recently been renovated, and a solar power system was installed, providing necessary electricity to the cottage. During your stay, this electricity can be used for LED lights that are installed to provide light in the evening and to charge small mobile devices.
Cooking at the cottage
In the cottage, there is a comfortable kitchenette supplied with sufficient cutlery, pans, basic herbs, and other cooking necessities. To make hot meals, the sizable and multifunctional gas grill (BBQ) at the sheltered cooking area in the yard of the cottage can be used. The side burner of the gas grill can be used as a gas stove to boil potatoes or to stir-fry vegetables, for example.
Heating at the cottage
The cabin is heated with an enclosed wood-burning fireplace/heater. Firewood for the fireplace and sauna is stored in the storage shelter close to the cottage.
Available drinking water
Upon arrival, 10 liters of drinking water will be waiting for you at the cottage, as it is included in the rent. This water can be used for drinking, cooking, and cleaning food. It is recommended to bring your own drinking water or buy 5L bottles from grocery stores if you are planning to stay for several days, as there is no tap water at the cottage. Water for other purposes, such as washing dishes and using the sauna, can be carried or pumped manually from the lake.
Usage of the environmental friendly toilet
On the yard, close to the cottage, we have installed an environmental friendly toilet in the spring of 2023. It is clean, modern and uses a composting method to efficiently serve as a toilet. Toilet paper and composting materials are available in the toilet.
The surrounding environment
The cottage is surrounded by beautiful coniferous forest, and there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. The mushroom and berry-picking areas around the cottage are excellent.
Important Information to know before renting the cottage:
- Smoking is strictly prohibited.
- Pets and animals are not allowed, even on the yard. As our cottage are for guests with pet allergies as well!
- Previous experience in heating up a wood-fired sauna, using a gas BBQ, and lighting a fireplace is required to safely stay at the cottage.
- Bed sheets and towels are included in the rental price.
- Guests are responsible for cleaning the cottage before checkout.

The Layout of the Etelä-Kalaton Cottage
Etelä-Kalaton is a one-level cottage consisting of one main family bedroom (with two bunk beds, suitable up to four adults), a living/dining room area, a kitchen, and a storage room close to the entrance. If desired, an additional mattress with comfortable bedsheets and duvets can be arranged for an extra visitor for a small surcharge. The covered terrace of the cottage has a direct lake view.
Right next to the cottage, there is an outdoor-covered cooking area where the gas BBQ and gas pit are located. A large picnic table is located closly to the outdoor cooking place, making outdoor eating possible. The private outdoor sauna is located about 40 meters from the main cottage. The changing room is located indoors, right next to the wood-fired sauna.
The deck from the sauna directly leads to Kalaton Lake. Parking place is located 200 meters from the cottage. To reach the cottage, you will need to walk about 200 meters on a private path from the private parking lot.
The Surroundings of the Etelä-Kalaton Cottage
AREA OF THE COTTAGE
The Etelä-Kalaton cottage is located in Rokansalo (Puumala), a beautiful area surrounded by Lake Saimaa. Etelä-Kalaton is located in a very peaceful environment and is surrounded by pine trees growing on esker ridges, which are long, winding ridge of layered sand and gravel formed by sediment deposits from meltwater during the Ice Age. A private road leads from the main road to the cottage.
The cottage is located right to a forest lake called Kalaton, surrounded with trees and quietness. What makes this cottage unique, is that there are no other neighbouring cottages around, meaning that our guests can enjoy the Kalaton lake with the surrounding forests all by themselves during their stay. The surrounding forest is great to walk and to gather plenty of wild berries and mushrooms. Also, both the Kalaton and Saimaa lake offer great fishing opportunities.
No worries of missing out enjoying Lake Saimaa, as you will be staying at the heart of Lake Saimaa.

Driving to Puumala to visit the grocery stores is the fastest option for buying food and other necessities like drinking water. It takes about 20 minutes by car to drive to Puumala city center (19 km). In Puumala, there is a K-Market and Sale. For dining out, Puumala has a great pizzeria and about five restaurants to choose from that serve local dishes, including freshly caught lake fish and other cuisines.

Driving to the Cottage & Travelling around
DISTANCE TO PUUMALA / NEARBY TOWNS OR CITIES
This Etelä-Kalaton cottage in Puumala is conveniently situated within a reasonable driving distance from several major Finnish cities.
Driving to Puumala:
- From Helsinki: Approximately 300 kilometers, about a 3.5-hour drive.
- From Tampere: Approximately 335 kilometers, about a 4 hour drive.
- Mikkeli: About 65 kilometers to the west, roughly a 1-hour drive.
To visit other towns and cities in the region:
- Savonlinna (recommended!): Approximately 70 kilometers to the northeast, around a 1-hour drive.
- Imatra: About 85 kilometers to the southeast, around 1 hour and 10 minutes drive.
- Lappeenranta: About 100 kilometers to the southeast, roughly a 1.5-hour drive.
If you are traveling to Puumala from Mikkeli, you will enjoy one of the most scenic routes in the Nordic countries, namely Road 62. This road has many beautiful curves, with pine trees in the background and parts where you will be driving between incredible islands. Additionally, day trips to other cities in the region are convenient by car or motorcycle from Puumala.

Cottage Information and Rules for Guest
Making a Reservation
Arrival and Departure
- Check-in: starting at 15.00 on the day of arrival.
- Check-out: by 12.00 on the day of departure.
Included in the Rental
The rental price of the cottage includes the equipment and facilities that were previously mentioned (see above) unless stated otherwise. A short overview of the most important elements:

Cancellation and Changes
We understand that sometimes holiday plans get changed. It is possible to cancel the cottage booking after paying, but please take the following points into account. For a refund, our guests are responsible for making the cancellation in the required timeframe before the supposed stay. A written cancellation is always required. For changing and cancelling your stay, please send an email to: ukonhonka@gmail.com.
The day of cancellation is the day the landlord has received the notice about the cancellation.
In case of cancellation, if the notice is submitted:
- At least 28 days before the supposed stay, only the administrative cost of 25,00€ will be charged,
- Shorter than 28 days but longer than 14 days before the supposed stay, 50% of the rental price will be charged,
- Less than 14 days before the supposed stay, the whole rental price will be charged.
Partial cancellation of the reservation is not possible. Partial cancellation (i.e., altering the arrival or departure date) will be considered a complete cancellation, and the remaining reservation will be a new, separate reservation.
